Salatac Gel is a combination of salicylic acid and lactic acid, which are routinely used in the treatment of verrucas, warts, corns and calluses for their keratolytic properties. When applied topically and in high enough concentrations, salicylic acid acts by achieving a slow, painless destruction of the thickened stratum corneum. It softens and destroys the stratum corneum of the affected tissue by reducing the adhesiveness of the corneocytes while causing the cornified epithelium to swell, soften, macerate and finally desquamate. In the treatment of warts, a mild irritant reaction, which may render the virus more prone to immunologic stimulation or response, may add to the mechanical removal of infected cells. Salactol is a combination of salicylic acid and lactic acid in flexible collodion. Salicylic acid has bacteriostatic and fungicidal actions, as well as keratolytic properties. Its effectiveness as a topical treatment for hyperkeratotic skin lesions is based on its mild keratolytic action, which slowly and painlessly destroys the epithelium. Contains benzalkonium chloride, which is adsorbed on to dry skin scales, these being a feature of pityriasis capitis and other seborrhoeic scalp conditions. The scales are loosened and attain a net positive charge. In the presence of the anionic foaming agent, sodium lauryl ether sulphate, the dandruff scales are then levitated into the negatively charged surface of the foam and washed from the hair. Benzalkonium chloride also acts as a mild antiseptic, which improves clinical performance when the condition is exacerbated by the presence of microbes. The major site of action against microorganisms appears to be the cell membrane, where permeability is altered.

Contains 0.5% salicylic acid (mild keratolytic), 1.0% coconut oil (emollient, softening agent and lubricant) and 1.0% distilled coal tar (antipruritic, keratoplastic).

Coal tar has been used dermatologically for hundreds of years and has been shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of scaly skin conditions such as psoriasis. The precise mechanism of action of coal tar is not understood, largely as a result of it comprising up to 10,000 components. There is evidence that topical application of coal tar improves psoriasis by reducing the excessive rate of mitotic epidermal cell division.
